Pet Odor Removal

Artificial turf backyard with diamond-pattern pavers in Southern Utah
Pet Odor Removal

The Smell Is Not in the Grass. It's in the Infill.

Rinsing with a hose spreads the problem. Vinegar eats the fibers. Bleach strips the color. Oxygen cleaners do nothing to urine crystals. There is exactly one thing that actually works on pet odor in artificial turf, and that's enzyme chemistry that breaks the compounds down at the molecular level. Every treatment we do is backed by a 100-day warranty.

The Biology

Why Your Dog's Pee Keeps Coming Back

When a dog urinates on artificial turf, the liquid drains through the blades and settles in the infill below. The urea breaks down into ammonia. Bacteria that feed on the resulting compounds multiply in the moisture. The bacterial activity is what actually creates the smell, and heat accelerates every part of the process.

That's why St. George summers are when pet owners finally call us. The turf smelled fine in March; by July, the backyard is unusable. It's not that the dog started peeing more. It's that the June-July heat hit a critical temperature where the bacterial cycle accelerated exponentially.

Water makes it worse. A hose rinse moves the urine crystals around, dilutes the ammonia temporarily, and then the drying process reconcentrates everything. The only real fix is to apply an enzyme that breaks urea and uric acid into odorless byproducts at the molecular level, which removes the bacterial food source and stops the cycle.

Common Questions

What Pet Owners Ask Us Most

  • Rinsing pushes the urine down into the infill without breaking it down. When it dries and heats up, the bacterial activity accelerates, and the ammonia smell comes back stronger than before. Water is a carrier, not a cleaner. The only way to remove the smell is to neutralize the urine compounds chemically.

  • A commercial-grade enzyme blend that breaks down urea, uric acid, and ammonia compounds into odorless components. It is biodegradable, pet-safe, kid-safe, and rinses clean. We intentionally do not use bleach (strips turf color), vinegar (damages fibers), or oxygen-based cleaners (ineffective on urine crystals).

  • For most homes, a single treatment keeps the smell gone for 3 to 6 months. For multi-dog households or older, heavily-used turf, monthly service is what keeps it consistently fresh. Either way, our 100-day warranty covers you if the smell returns faster than expected.

  • Yes, and honestly those are the yards where the treatment makes the biggest difference. If your turf is 3 to 7 years old and has had pets, there is a lot of buildup we can neutralize in a single visit. We typically recommend one deep clean followed by a Pet Owner monthly plan.

  • If your artificial turf smells like pet urine within 100 days of our treatment, we come back and re-treat it at no cost. The warranty covers the same areas and conditions we treated on the original visit. It does not cover new pet damage from new pets or hotspot areas introduced after our visit.

  • Yes. Those hotspot areas need pre-treatment with a concentrated enzyme application before the main sanitize pass. We identify hotspots during the initial walk-through and handle them up front. Long-term hotspot areas are exactly why we built the 100-day warranty.

  • Yes. The enzyme solution is safe for all pets and for children. We wait for the turf to dry (about 60 to 90 minutes) before we recommend pets back on it, but that is a dwell-time issue, not a toxicity concern.
